A review about the spectacular movie = 2012.Me and Russel tried to get Friday's tickets, but all were sold out. So as we went to Plaza Singapore, we popped up @ The Cathay to get the next day's tickets. Very sure, this is one of some Ronald Emmerich's movie.
This time Ronald Emmerich and co-writer Harald Kloser use the Mayan calendar and other end-of-days prophecies for their doomsday scenario, which imagines the world coming to an end in 2012. What can I say about this film?? My boyfriend said it's something like "The Day After Tomorrow" (by Emmerich as well). For me, it's a mixed up from "Poseidon", "Independence Day" and may be a bit of the Bible story Noah's Arc. The movie follows the fate of a dozen characters as they fall victim to a series of calamities brought on by some kind of solar meltdown. The issue is not so much what caused the cataclysm but how humanity will respond to the crisis.
Cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-worthy. Music also propels the movie, with "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert providing a rousing anthem over the end credits. This is a wildly over the top anthology of disaster pictures old and new, and Emmerich isn't above recycling other people's ideas. But it's enjoyable and the opening CGI thrill-ride through the collapsing streets of Los Angeles is undeniably good.
For much of the running time (about 150 minutes), the film is almost leisurely, and it's an oddly relaxing experience. Yes, the film kinda more or less avoids dealing with the whole 'everyone on earth is going to die' plot thread *LOL*, but we've got Deep Impact for that.
